From "History of Norwich, Connecticut"William Gager came to America in 1630, with Gov. Winthrop, but died the same year from a disease contracted by ill diet at sea, which swept off many of the emigrants. He is characterized by contemporary journalists as " a skillful surgeon, a right godly man, and one of the deacons of our congregation."* His son John, the only child that has been tracedt was one of the company that settled at New London with John Winthrop the younger. His name is there found on the earliest extant list of inhabitants.

William was born in 1585 in Soffolkshire, England. William married Hannah Mayhew, date unknown in England and they came to the US in 1630.
William Gager, the progenitor of the New London and Norwich family of that name, from which descended the subject of this sketch, came to New England in 1630, in the fleet with Winthrop. He was elected a deacon in the Church at Charlestown, but died in September of the same year from a disease incident to the diet on the voyage, as did his wife and two of his children. He seemed to be reckoned by Governor Winthrop as one of his family, a Suffolk man, and the former of his will remembered by bequest the latter's son. Will Gager be characterized by contemporary journalists as "skillful surgeon," a right goodly Surgeon, came in the pay of the Massachusetts Bay Government in July 1630. He settled in Charlestown. His son, John, received from the estate of Governor Winthrop in 1649, a debt formerly due his father.
