Generation 1John Cowles (Reference # 6786) is our first known ancestor in the Cowles line. He was born 1598 probably at Gloucestershire, England and died 13 September 1675 at Hatfield, Hampshire Co., MA. He was buried at Hatfield in the "old" cemetery on Prospect St. No original stone marks the spot but a memorial has been placed there. He married Hannah (Reference # 6787) 1638. Her name is sometimes seen as Mehitable Hart but this appears to be incorrect. She was born 1613 and died 17 March 1683/4 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. She is buried in the Ancient Burying Ground, Center (First) Church, Hartford, CT. The original stone remains and has been described as "a good early stone by George Griswold of Windsor." John Cowles 1599-1675
, Hatfield, MA
Born in England. Died at Hatfield, Mass., September 1765, aged 76 or 77 years. His wife Hannah died in Hartford, Conn., March 17 1683, aged about 70 years and her grave, in Center Church Cemetery, is marked by a stone. He was an original proprietor and settler of the town of Farmington, Conn., in 1640, a constable and p[illar of the curch, deputy to the General Court of Connecticut and Appraiser of Estates. He moved to Hartford in 1656 and was taxed there for a mill that year and the next.
In 1659 he was chosen Surveyor of Highways for the south side and was member of a jury in 1659-60. It is understood that he, with five other families, spent the winter of 1660-61 at the present site of Hatfield, then in Hadley, Mass., and he was granted an allotment of land there September 24, 1661, provided he be there with his family by June 24, 1662, but the time was extgended to 1664. He was then at Hartford, another grant was dated December 19, 1661. At Hartford he was a member of two juries December 30, 1662 and January 6, 1662-63 and an appraiser Feb. 11, 1662-63. He returned to Hatfield in 1664, was constable in 1665, Townsman in 1666, Member of Committees in 1668 to build a church and procure the first minister, one of the seven pillars of the first church in Hatfield organized about 1670-71, one of the first Selectmen of Hatfield, Incorporated May 31, 1670 which hitherto here at the time of his death. In 1671 and 1672 he was one of three commissioners appointed by the court to end small cases in Hatfield.

At a Particular Court held at Hartford 30 December, 1662. The Indictment of Nathaniel Greensmith and of Rebecca his wife for witchcraft: Nathaniel Greensmith, thou art here indicted by the name of Nathaniel Greensmith for not haveing the feare of God before thine eyes; thou hast entertained familiarity with Satan the grand Enemy of God and Mankind, and by his help hast acted things in a preter naturall way beyond human abilities in a naturall course, for which according to ye Law of God and ye established laws of this Commonwealth thou deserveth to die. The Jury returned that they find ye prisoner at ye Barr, Nathaniel Greensmith, guilty of ye Indictment.
Respecting Rebecca Greensmith, Prisoner at ye Barr, the Jury find her guilty of ye Indictment. The said Rebecca Confesseth in open Court that she is guilty of ye charge laid in agaynst her.

John Cowles was a member of the jury during the witchcraft trial of Nathaniel Greensmith and his wife Rebecca. He also conducted an inventory of the estate of Nathaniel Greensmith after the couple's tragic execution.
