Mr. Oliver Mellowes (Martha). born about 1598, died at Braintree, Mass., in 1638; married first, at Boston, co. Lincoln, 3 Aug. 1620, Mary James, baptized 13 Oct. 1597, daughter of John James; married second, at Boston, 1 Jan. 1633/4, Elizabeth (Hawkredd) Coney, who married third, before 25 July 1641, Thomas Makepeace. She was baptized at Boston, 8 Dec. 1605, died after 1670; married first, 16 Dec. 1624, John Coney. The first wife of Mr. Mellowes belonged to a ministerial family with American connections. Rev. John James, graduated from Cambridge, preached in Lincolnshire, Eng., lived in Boston some years, and was rector of Skirbeck, co. Lincoln, from 1607 until his death in 1612. The following children were recorded in Boston, co. Lincoln: Thomas, bapt. 5 Oct. 1595; Mary, bapt. 13 Oct. 1597; Daniel, bapt. 1 Feb. 1598/9; Samuel bapt. 21 Feb. 1600/1; and Jeremy, bapt. 15 Aug. 1605 (one Jeremy was bur. 22 Apr. 1611). There were probably older children. The daughter Mary m. at Boston, 3 Aug. 1620, Oliver Mellowes, nephew of Rev. Peter Bulkeley, and has many descendants in the United States. Mary's borther Thomas James, bapt. 5 Oct. 1595, was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (B.A. 1615, M.A. 1618), came to New England 1632, returned to England about 1648 and became minister at Needham, co. Suffolk, where he d. Feb. 1682/3. His son Thomas James, Jr., was minister at Easthampton, L. I., and m. about 1647 Ruth Jones, daughter of Rev. John Jones of Fairfield, Conn., and sister of Sarah Jones who m. Thomas Bulkeley, son of Rev. Peter. The children of Thomas James, Jr., married into prominent Long Island families: see Families of Old Fairfield, vol 1. pp. 327-329.
