BIRTH SOURCE: Kelsey Kindred Newsletter citing his Will, February 1990
ESTATE: WILL 7 December 1575 proved 11 January 1575/1576 Takeley, Essex, England
ESTATE SOURCE: Found in Essex records at LDS Library Salt Lake City The will of George Kelsey, Sr., was found by Kelsey Kindred member Bonnie Miller in the Essex records at the LDS Library. It was written in Old English and signed by George Kelsey, indicating he was an educated man. The will was written 7 December 1575 and probated 11 January 1575/76 Julian Calendar. George, Sr. lived in Takeley, Essex County and in his will directed he be buried in the Church Yard there. He also names his wife, Johane as Executor and his brother Thomas to oversee the provisions of the will. It is noted that the spelling in the will was Kelsey, as it is today. It appears that George, Jr., was not yet 20 years of age as a bequest in the amount of 20 marks was to be paid him at age 20. The will also names 5 sisters of George, Jr.: Marget Myller, Johane, Mary, Frances and Ann. The will directs that Marget Myller be given 40 shillings and her married children Thomas Myller and George, 10 shillings. The other daughters were to receive 5 marks at age 21 or at their marriage, whichever came first. This may indicate that George, Sr. may have been married earlier and that Marget may have been of the first union as she is the only one with married children. In addition to the Kelsey information found in the Essex records, it was found that George Kelsey, Jr. married Elizabeth Hammond, daughter of William Hammond and Margaret Brette of Much Monden, Herts., England. The additional information listed in the various Brette/Hammond/Woode/Baginholde records comes from these same Essex records.
