Richard Cotton, son of Sir George CottonRichard Cotton was born in 1539 in Stoke, Warwick, England and died on 14 June 1602 in Stoke, Warwick, England. He was the son of Sir George Cotton and Mary Onley 1849. Richard married Mary Mainwaring. Mary was born about 1541 in Lightfield, Stropshire, England. She was the daughter of Sir Arthur Mainwaring and Margaret Mainwaring. She died before 2 June 1578.
Children: (Quick Family Chart. Frances Cotton was born in 1573 and died before 16, 1646. Frances married George Abell. George was born about 1561 in Stapenhill, England. He is the son of Robert Abell. He was buried on 13 Sep 1630 in Lockington, Leicester, England. There appears to be confusion over the mother of Frances Cotton. Some think that Jane Seyliard is her mother. The following presents the evidence that Mary Mainwaring is the correct mother. The solution to the problem was presented by Thompson in his "The Genealogist" article. It is basically an argument by elimination. I am a little fuzzy on the details (it's been years), but if I recall correctly, the children of the first wife were named in the will of her father, and the children of the third wife were named in her own will. Frances is named in neither of these, and thus is presumed to be daughter of the second wife, Mary Mainwaring. It is solid work. http://www.renderplus.com/hartgen/htm/de-coton.htm
