Agnes Prowse, born April 14, 1576 in Tiverton, Devon, England; died June 6, 1622 in Taunton, Somerset, England. She was the daughter of John Prowse and Elizabeth Colwick. She married (1) John Trowbridge July 31, 1597 in St. Peter's Church, Tiverton, Devon, England. He was the son of Thomas Trowbridge and Joan Lawrence alias Hutchin.
Notes for Agnes Prowse: When Agnes Prowse married John Trowbridge, the marriage was preceded by a settlement made by Thomas Trowbridge (Sr.) which granted Agnes an annuity of L30 for life issuing from all his lands at Rowbarton, occupied by his mother-in-law, Alice Hutchings, for her life. On the same day, John was admitted to a life interest in his father's properties at Obridge and Staplegrove and Pyrland, partly occupied by Thomas' wife Johane (nee Hutchings). Agnes' marriage took place at St. Peters, Tiverton, July 31, 1597, 13 1/2 months before her father's death. (The Gen., op. cit., p.13, Appendix G p. 25). The above Thomas Trowbridge Sr. was a leading citizen and charitable founder, a mercer, with a Tudor mansion, extant, in the high street. and had served as constable and portreve of the castle manor. Agnes' husband John Prowse was sole son and h. at his father's death 1620, and served Taunton as Mayor and Magistrate 1629 and 1637, and also as warden of St. Mary Magdalen, constable and portreve of Taunton castle manor. He married (2) 11 March 1623/4 Alice Reed of Tiverton. Her family - John PROWSE II was born in 1546 in Tiverton, Devonshire, England, from age at fathers inq. He died on 11 September 1598 in Tiverton, Devonshire, England. The parish register of Tiverton, county Devon. contains the entry: ‘july 1597. Jn° Strobridge and Annis Prowse ... xxxi Day." The marriage thus occurred at the bride's home two days after the above surrender was signed. Annis, and even Ann. was often used for the more formal and legalistic Agnes (Latin ‘‘Agneta"). Annes daughter of John Prowse was baptized at Tiverton, 14 April 1576. Her parents, John Prowse and Elizabeth Coke, were married at Tiverton. 1 June 1567. Agnes had an older sister, Prudence Prowse, baptized 13 February 1569/70. who died unmarried and was buried 16 September 1599; and she gave the name, Prudence Trowbridge, to the first daughter who was born after her sister's death. Her eldest daughter, born before her sister died, was named Elizabeth after her mother.
